Location: Bonsai Rock, Lake Tahoe
The brilliant waters of Lake Tahoe have lapped gently against this granite monolith for thousands of years. Among the innumerable rocks ringing the lake’s shore this is no ordinary boulder. Known as "Bonsai Rock," its fissures are just wide enough for several stunted trees to take root. Pine, fir, and a flowering shrub seem to grow directly out of the stone, though a bit of soil must be nestled in the crevices. These trees are better protected than those on the shore. Shielded from wildfire, they may even outlive their mainland counterparts, thriving in their unique rocky refuge.
