I don’t care much for deserts, they are hot, bleak, and relentless. There is no respite from their one-sided hostile nature. They are bitchy and insatiable in their desire to suck the life out of you. Oh, have I mentioned how they coat you in icky, clinging dust? I prefer shade and a green forest floor.

So why bother even taking a camera into a desert? Because there is so much beauty. Deserts are like animals stripped of their skins revealing the amazing complexity that lies underneath. Just as we can never know ourselves if we don’t know what is underneath, we can’t know the earth unless it is stripped bare.
