About Bill

Photography is almost genetic in my family. Both my great-great grandfather and great grandfather were photographers living on the edge of the American frontier. Their home, Leavenworth Kansas, was a staging point for wagon trains heading west. They photographed many of those pioneers and left behind over 10,000 glass plate negatives. Both my grandfather and father were enthusiastic amateurs.

For my ancestors photography was about recording the lives of people but for me it’s about the natural world and exploration. I've been a wanderer from an early age. Captivated by the magnificence of the world's great mountain ranges, deserts, and rivers I've traveled and climbed as much as possible, camera in hand. Along the way I've photographed many great outdoor athletes pursuing their dreams in the mountains. The grand and inspirational as well as the small and peaceful are what informs my photography.

As a photographer I’ve spent years looking at maps and wandering the landscape searching for the best that nature has to offer; a combination of beautiful place, stunning light and perfect moment. I may return to a location year after year until all the elements come together and the photo is complete. I hope my photographs communicate all of this to you.

Giving Back

Every month a portion of the proceeds from The Outdoor Pictures Website goes to providing homeless street kids in Kathmandu Nepal with food, education and shelter. Why Kathmandu street kids? Because in all my travels these are the children I saw who were the most desperate. You can find out more here: cpcs-int.org.
